Mission & Ethos

Culinary Curators

Rescuing centuries of tangible human food knowledge from the homogenization of globalized monoculture agriculture.

Bridging Archaeology and Gastronomy

Founded by an independent circle of food historians, fermentologists, and ethnobotanists, curioscandipuzzle.rest exists to resurrect forgotten culinary arts.

Modern supermarkets present an illusion of endless abundance, yet 75% of global calories now derive from just 12 plant species and 5 animal species. In antiquity, the culinary landscape was radically more diverse: human communities engaged with hundreds of semi-domesticated wild grains, hyper-regional botanical saps, and sophisticated slow fermentations.

We treat ancient recipe codices not as dusty museum artifacts, but as living culinary blueprints that hold critical solutions for modern sustainability, microbiome health, and flavor exploration.

Our Curatorial Principles

  • 01

    Primary Source Rigor

Every published recipe traces directly to verified archaeological ceramic residues, pollen samples, or translated pre-industrial manuscripts.

  • 02

    Microbiological Transparency

We subject experimental reconstructions to modern food safety criteria (water activity, salinity, pH thresholds) to demystify ancient health safety.

  • 03

    Open Scholarly Registry

We publish our ratios and field transcription notes free of paywalls to encourage home cooks, chefs, and historians to reconstruct forgotten dishes.

We operate from our field station and historical archives in London, UK, collaborating with experimental kitchens and heirloom seed banks across Europe and the Mediterranean.
